New WP 5.2 commemorates jazz musician

In memory of Jaco Pastorius (✝ 1987), the best electric bass player the world has seen. He played with jazz musicians like Lenny White, Wayne Shorter and even Herbie Hancock. His interpretation of Charlie Parker's 'Donna Lee' is legendary. A technically challenging piece he recorded Aufhieb (with the 1 take) for his first album. The WordPress development team thus stays true to its line and honors great jazz musicians.

What's new in WP 5.2?

  • Onboard tools to identify troubleshooting configuration issues;
  • New debugging capabilities for developers;
  • Rescue and recovery measures for the dreaded white screens caused by faulty PHP code;
  • New implementations to improve accessibility, e.g. for screen readers;
  • New dashboard icons;
  • Version check of plugins regarding the used and installed PHP version WordPress "Jaco" now expects at least PHP version 5.6.20;
  • A revised page template including additional CSS classes for the privacy page;
  • New hook for inserting code directly in the HTML tag
  • The new release is now also available with Webpack and Babel configuration. This results in improvements for JavaSript developers;

Preparations

Whether your update also works perfectly at the first take depends on your preparations. What is the best way to proceed with a release update.

Safety first

Data security is paramount, so make a full backup of your database before updating. Back up your WordPress program files including subfolders via FTP to a secure local medium. You should also back up your database backup file to a local medium. Check the PHP version of your plugins and widgets to version 5.6.20. Then perform the release update at a time when your site is known to be least busy. If necessary, inform your site visitors in advance with a notice about a planned site update. Then carry out the planned release change and then do a thorough functional test in the frontend and backend area of WordPress.

Large installations

For larger installations or high demands on the availability of your WordPress sites, a test update on an isolated test environment on a local offline system is recommended in any case. Use your current WordPress program files and, if possible, a copy of your productive database.
